How Does Athena Care Work With Vanderbilt?

Athena Care helps meet the high demand for patients seeking Vanderbilt mental health services by eliminating long patient wait times through a streamlined referral process. Vanderbilt students and faculty may be referred to Athena Care mental health providers to obtain mental health services promptly and circumvent long patient wait times and low appointment availability.

Athena Care and Vanderbilt communicate consistently throughout the process to provide a seamless continuum of care. For example, a Vanderbilt student may not return to the same therapist following a summer break due to difficulties with scheduling a follow-up. Before graduation, the student may want to establish long-term care with a therapist or medication provider in Middle Tennessee who accepts their insurance. Or perhaps a faculty member or student is seeking medication management at the Vanderbilt University Counseling Center (VUCC), but the next available appointment is months ahead. By assisting Vanderbilt Behavioral Health in facilitating collaborative, convenient treatment for patients after discharge, Athena Care provides a solution to timely and successful follow-up care.

The following steps describe how referrals from Vanderbilt to Athena Care work:

  • The referring Vanderbilt provider sends a referral via fax or email to Athena care.
    • Fax: 615-320-1177
    • Email: [email protected]
    • Include patient name, DOB, and insurance information
  • An Athena Care staff member will follow up with the referring provider and patient within 3 business days or 24 business hours.
  • The patient may also schedule an initial appointment independently by calling (615) 320-1155 during Athena Care business hours: M-F 7am – 6pm.

Benefits of Services at Athena Care for Vanderbilt Students

Overcoming challenges to accessing a complex mental health care system while studying at one of the country’s top universities is typically not a priority for Vanderbilt University students. However, it can be impossible to complete assignments and obtain a degree without prioritizing emotional well-being. Therefore, following a Vanderbilt mental health assessment, students need to establish care with medication providers and therapists in Middle Tennessee.

Continuity of behavioral healthcare for students in Middle Tennessee is crucial, and fostering trust between provider and patient takes time. To help students learn successfully and grow interpersonally, Athena Care provides medication providers, therapists, TMS, and Spravato for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and psychological testing by a clinical psychologist to ensure the most accurate diagnosis and treatment.
